“East Jesus
Nowhere" is a song by the American punk rock band Green Day. The single
was released October 19, 2009. It was released as the third single from their
eighth album 21st Century Breakdown. The title is derived from a phrase in the
2007 film Juno.
The song rebukes fundamentalist religion and was written by singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong after he attended a church
service where a friend's baby was baptized.
I was exposed to “Green Day” in 2011.
I was shocked, surprised and actually fell in love with the song writer’s
ability to penetrate many social issues of the western culture and put it into
one song which is just 5 minutes.
The song discusses cons of
fundamentalist religion which is a very strong and sensitive aspect I would not
like to write on.
Now since I love this song personally
I would like to discuss my personal belief on religion.
I’m a Buddhist. Buddhism is not a
religion, it is a way of life in my opinion. Many Buddhist prides themselves
for its lack of fundamentalism. I’m not
saying I’m a good Buddhist but there are aspects of strong fundamentalism
hidden and embedded to Buddhism as well.
This photo is where I meditate and do
my basic religious activities.
I myself believe that people should
have a curious mind on the religion and its part in the life you are living. It
opens your perspective.
That is the purpose of the title and
the photo.
